A Euphoric Utopia

Sherry Hayslip decided to participate in the 2020 Dallas Kips Bay showcase house, its first-ever in that city, and didn’t let COVID derail her plans. “I have wanted to be part of Kips Bay since I was a young designer, so I was honored to be included. It was an opportunity to be my most creative self.”

Sherry’s space was a hidden loft, with only a single small skylight for natural light. Whether it was a response to COVID or not, Sherry and her team settle on a theme of “Utopia” and designed a bright, art-filled room as escape from the chaos of everyday life. The space is filled with works from local artists, including even that single skylight, where artist Carmen Menza, known for her light boxes, custom-designed a colored sky light.

“Our room is a space for reflection,” Sherry explained. She and her team applied that both literally, using gleaming surfaces, including the large mirror art panel featured behind Sherry, that just happens to conceal a hidden door.

“With no client to cater to, this was an opportunity to indulge,” said Sherry. “Supporting local artists has always been a passion of mine—so I used this room to indulge to the fullest! And I feel it worked, because everyone who came into this room smiled.”
